MES Requests SIR Forms in Marathi; Activist Questions Support for Kannada Speakers in Maharashtra

On July 1, 2023, during a door-to-door enumeration initiative conducted by staff from the SIR (Surveys and Impact Research) in Bandur Galli, Belagavi, MES (Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party) leader and former Belagavi city corporation member Sunil Balekundri declined to accept the census forms presented in Kannada.

Balekundri’s refusal has sparked discussions about language preferences and representation in local governance. It is essential to note that Karnataka, where Belagavi is located, has a diverse linguistic demographic, and such incidents highlight ongoing debates regarding language use in official procedures.

Historically, Belagavi has been a focal point for language and regional politics, as it is situated near the Maharashtra border. The region has a significant number of residents who speak both Kannada and Marathi, making language a sensitive issue in local governance and community interactions.
