“Pidari Ekaveeri: A Fierce Goddess Known for Her Charismatic Smile and Raja Rajas Mother-in-Laws Donation”
R. Kalaikovan, a researcher at the Dr. Rajamanickanar Centre for Historical Research, has stated that a recently discovered idol may represent the oldest identifiable Pidari image in Tamil Nadu. Pidari deities hold significant importance in Tamil culture and are often associated with local guardian spirits. Kalaikovan notes that while numerous inscriptions dating back to the Chola period mention these deities, corresponding visual representations of Pidari images have seldom been identified.
The Chola dynasty, which flourished from approximately the 9th to the 13th century, was known for its extensive contributions to art, architecture, and literature. The inscriptions indicating the presence of Pidari deities reflect the socio-religious landscape of that era. This discovery could provide valuable insights into the iconography and worship practices related to Pidari figures in ancient Tamil society. Further study of the idol could enhance understanding of regional traditions and the evolution of devotional practices over time.
