“Beekeeping Project Supports Livelihoods of Irula Tribals in Pichavaram Mangroves”
A total of 250 bee boxes are set to be installed within the mangrove ecosystem as part of a new initiative aimed at enhancing pollination and fostering the natural regeneration of mangrove trees. This project is specifically designed to support approximately 100 households from the Irula tribal community, who traditionally depend on natural resources for their livelihoods.
The installation of these bee boxes is anticipated to increase the population of pollinators in the region, which is vital for the health of mangrove ecosystems that serve as critical habitats for diverse wildlife and provide important coastal protection. In addition to environmental benefits, this initiative may also enhance the economic prospects for the Irula community by promoting beekeeping and honey production, offering them a sustainable source of income.
Local environmental groups and government agencies are collaborating on this project, emphasizing the importance of preserving mangrove ecosystems while concurrently supporting indigenous communities. The initiative reflects a broader effort to blend conservation with community development, and it aligns with global targets for sustainable development and biodiversity preservation.
