Census Rehearsal Includes Option for Caste Recording
The methodology for enumerating caste in the upcoming Census 2027 will be finalized following an analysis of the feedback gathered during a recent test exercise. This decision comes in the wake of complications experienced during the 2011 caste survey, where the open-column format led to the identification of over 4.6 million distinct ‘caste names’.
The 2027 Census aims to more accurately capture the diverse social structure of India, as understanding caste dynamics is crucial for policy-making and resource allocation. To improve upon the previous approach, the Census data collection team is currently evaluating various strategies to streamline the enumeration process while ensuring that all communities are appropriately represented.
In preparation for this large-scale survey, officials are encouraging public participation and suggestions to enhance the methodology. This feedback will play a critical role in shaping the final enumeration process and addressing the complexities associated with caste data collection in a multicultural society.
