Delhi Excels in National School Performance Index Amid Ongoing Enrollment and Retention Challenges
Delhi has been recognized as one of the better-performing regions in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) for the academic year 2025-26. This assessment evaluates the quality of education across various key indicators, including infrastructure, teacher quality, and learning outcomes.
Despite these achievements, the PGI report revealed concerning trends regarding student enrolment and retention. Specifically, it noted a decline in enrolment rates at the foundational stages of education, suggesting that fewer young children are entering school. Additionally, retention rates at the lower secondary level have dropped, indicating that many students are not continuing their education beyond the initial years.
These findings underline the urgent need for targeted interventions in early childhood education and strategies to retain students as they progress through their schooling. Educational authorities in Delhi may need to implement initiatives that promote early enrolment and create engaging learning environments to support students through higher grades. Stakeholders suggest that collaboration between government, schools, and communities is crucial in addressing these challenges and ensuring that Delhi’s educational advancements are sustainable over the long term.
