Creation of 17 New Tehsils Approved in Ladakh

Lieutenant Governor (LG) V K Saxena has approved the establishment of 17 new tehsils in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh. This administrative decision is part of an effort aimed at enhancing governance and making government services more accessible to the local population by significantly reducing travel distances.

The formation of these new tehsils is expected to cut government service travel times by over 300 kilometers for residents, thereby facilitating improved access to essential services and administrative functions. Prior to this reorganization, the region had only five districts and a limited number of tehsils, often leading to long travel times for residents who required government assistance.

The decision to reorganize the administrative divisions stems from a comprehensive evaluation of the regional needs and is intended to support local governance by decentralizing authority and administrative functions. The Tehsil is an administrative division that typically serves as a jurisdiction for local governance and is vital in states and UTs across India.

In recent years, Ladakh has experienced significant administrative restructuring following the revocation of its special status in 2019, leading to its designation as a Union Territory. This change has sparked initiatives to bolster local administration and enhance the efficiency of governmental operations, such as the recent establishment of new tehsils and the creation of new revenue villages.

This move has been welcomed by residents who anticipate better access to government services and an overall enhancement of local governance, which is crucial for the regions development.
