Monetization of Assets Aids NHAI in Reducing Debt
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully prepaid loans exceeding ₹1.2 lakh crore, marking a significant reduction in its overall debt. This strategic move is part of NHAI’s asset monetization initiative, which has gained momentum over the past year. Notably, the authority has not engaged in direct borrowing from the market since 2022.
In the previous fiscal year, NHAI achieved a record high in asset monetization, raising ₹41,079 crore. Building on this progress, the NHAI has set an ambitious target to raise ₹30,000 crore through project monetization in the current fiscal year.
Asset monetization involves generating revenue from existing infrastructure assets, enabling the authority to fund new projects and enhance the quality of national highways without incurring additional debt. This approach aligns with the governments broader goal of improving road infrastructure and connectivity across the country, which is crucial for economic growth. The NHAI’s ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to financial prudence while striving to maintain and expand India’s transportation networks.
