Indias ethanol initiative witnesses state fuel companies investing Rs 1.72 lakh crore.
Indias Ethanol Mission Sees Significant Investment and Progress
State-run fuel companies in India have invested approximately ₹1.72 lakh crore (around $21 billion) in the ethanol sector over the past three years. This investment aligns with the governments broader mission to increase the use of ethanol as a fuel alternative, which not only supports energy security but also aims to reduce carbon emissions.
The initiative has led to the procurement of 2,418 crore liters of ethanol, and noteworthy statistics reveal that since June, approximately 3.9 million tonnes of rice and 6.8 million tonnes of maize have been utilized for ethanol production. This shift to ethanol is not limited to automotive fuel; the government is also exploring options to integrate ethanol as a mainstream cooking fuel, potentially adding to its applications alongside liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Ethanol blending in fuel has reportedly yielded significant financial benefits, with the Indian government estimating savings of around ₹1.97 lakh crore (about $24 billion) in foreign exchange. This has implications for the countrys energy imports and overall economic stability.
The program is part of Indias commitment to enhancing renewable energy usage, and as of now, the initiative continues to garner interest and support from various sectors. As the country moves towards energy self-sufficiency, further developments in the ethanol space are anticipated, potentially reshaping the national energy landscape.
