Pakistan aims to secure $10 billion in US financial support to enhance reserves.

Pakistan Requests $10 Billion from the U.S. to Strengthen Foreign Reserves

Islamabad, Pakistan – In an effort to stabilize its struggling economy, Pakistan has formally requested a $10 billion financial backstop facility from the United States, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The initiative aims to bolster Pakistans foreign exchange reserves, which have been under significant pressure due to various macroeconomic challenges, including high inflation and declining exports.

Pakistans economy has been facing multiple crises, resulting in a rising current account deficit and escalating fiscal pressures. The request for U.S. support comes on the heels of Pakistans increased involvement in international diplomacy, particularly its role in mediating tensions in the region, including the recent Iran conflict.

The U.S. support is seen as a crucial lifeline to help stabilize the currency and provide the government with additional resources necessary for economic recovery. Alongside this request, there are ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding further economic reforms and assistance programs to address budgetary concerns and restore financial credibility.

Pakistans foreign reserves have dwindled, which has raised concerns about the country’s ability to meet its international financial obligations. As of late September 2023, the countrys reserves stood at approximately $7.5 billion, which is barely enough to cover a few months of imports. This situation continues to exert pressure on the Pakistani rupee and raise commodity prices within the country.

The outcome of these negotiations will be closely monitored, as they will have significant implications for Pakistans economic stability and its future relations with international financial institutions.
