HDFC Bank Board Imposes Penalty on Sashidhar Jagdishan for Business Overreach
HDFC Bank Board Imposes Penalties on Senior Executives Following Business Overreach Concerns
HDFC Banks board of directors has taken disciplinary action against several senior executives, including Managing Director Sashidhar Jagdishan and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Srinivasan Vaidyanathan. The penalties arise from findings related to the bank’s deposit pricing review and allegations of business overreach.
The board concluded that there was no improper motive regarding the deposit pricing strategy but identified lapses in judgment that warranted penalties. Each executive will face a fine of Rs 1 lakh (approximately USD 1,200) as part of the board’s decision, which reflects a commitment to uphold corporate governance standards.
This internal investigation was initiated in response to concerns about the handling of deposits related to the Mumbai Suburban Railway Development Corporation (MSRDC). It was revealed during the inquiry that while there were no violation intentions, the actions taken by the executives were deemed inappropriate in the context of their roles.
The bank has publicly stated that it remains dedicated to maintaining transparency and accountability, reinforcing its commitment to ethical business practices. As a result of these penalties, the bank’s American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) have seen a decline in market performance, reflecting investor sentiment impacted by the recent developments in corporate governance.
The management has expressed that the corrective measures are intended to bolster operational integrity and prevent similar issues in the future. Further steps are expected to be announced as the bank continues to evaluate its internal controls and practices moving forward.
