The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has summoned Meta Platforms, Inc., the parent company of Facebook, in light of the recent brief removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modis post addressing strict actions regarding alleged paper leaks. This incident has sparked significant discussions about social media content regulation in India.

Following the removal, the government expressed dissatisfaction with Metas explanation regarding the incident, characterizing it as “not reasonable,” and emphasized that the matter remains unresolved. PM Modis post, which highlighted government policy against such leaks, was reinstated shortly after its removal, leading to renewed scrutiny of Metas content moderation practices.

In a proactive response, Meta acknowledged the removal was a mistake and issued an apology. They later dispatched their global head of public policy to meet with Indian officials to address the situation.

This incident occurs amid broader discussions in India concerning the regulation of social media platforms. A parliamentary committee is currently hearing testimony from various tech companies, including Meta, Twitter (now X), Google, and Snapchat, as part of ongoing efforts to establish comprehensive regulations for online content and user safety.
