Income club surpasses Rs 100 crore mark with highest entries in four years

Government statistics indicate that for the fiscal year 2024-25, a total of 576 individuals reported incomes exceeding Rs 100 crore. This figure includes 161 new high-income earners who were added to the tax rolls within the past year.

The majority of these high-income taxpayers are categorized as non-salaried, which aligns with historical income trends showing a preference for wealth generation through investments and entrepreneurship rather than traditional salary-based earnings.

Furthermore, there has been a notable rise in the contribution of direct tax collections to the overall government revenue, reflecting changes in the economic landscape and improved tax compliance measures. Since the fiscal year 2013-14, the number of individuals filing income tax returns has also experienced substantial growth, indicating a broader base of taxpayers and the effectiveness of campaigns aimed at increasing tax participation.

These developments underscore the changing dynamics of wealth generation in the country and may influence future tax policies aimed at further enhancing revenue sustainability.
