Delhi Private Universities Bill: 25% of Seats Reserved for Local Students, Fee Waiver Proposals Introduced

The Delhi cabinet has approved a draft bill aimed at establishing private universities in the region. This proposed legislation includes a provision that mandates that 25% of available seats in all courses be reserved for students who are residents of Delhi. Additionally, it introduces merit-cum-means scholarships to support eligible local students in financing their education.

Under the bill, newly established private universities will function under a unitary model, ensuring they comply with regulations set forth by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Furthermore, the Delhi government will maintain oversight of these institutions and will be granted representation within their management structures.
