Study Finds High Prevalence of Coeliac Disease in Children with Anaemia

Recent research has identified a significant prevalence of coeliac disease among children diagnosed with anaemia. A study published in the EMJ highlights that children suffering from anaemia are at an increased risk of being affected by this autoimmune condition, which is characterized by an adverse reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.

The research analyzed a cohort of paediatric patients presenting with anaemia and found that a notable percentage also tested positive for coeliac disease. This correlation suggests that healthcare providers should consider screening for coeliac disease in children with unexplained anaemia, as early diagnosis can lead to effective management and improvement in overall health outcomes.

Coeliac disease affects approximately 1 in 100 people globally and can lead to various complications, including malnutrition and increased risk of other autoimmune disorders if left untreated.
