Government announces ₹62,500 crore mobile manufacturing scheme with additional incentives for local sourcing.

The Indian government has officially launched a Rs 62,500-crore mobile manufacturing scheme aimed at boosting local production and enhancing the smartphone supply chain in the country. This scheme not only sets a framework for manufacturing but also provides additional incentives for companies that prioritize local sourcing of components.

The initiative aligns with Indias broader strategy to increase its self-reliance in technology manufacturing, particularly in the mobile device sector, which has seen rapid growth in recent years. The government is emphasizing the need for manufacturers to collaborate with local suppliers to promote domestic production capabilities.

In related developments, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has suggested that Apple is considering an expansion of its manufacturing footprint in India to include products beyond iPhones. This move could further elevate India’s position as a key global manufacturing hub in the tech industry.

Additionally, Minister Vaishnaw announced plans for a homegrown mobile brand that is expected to launch by mid-2027. The government has also set eligibility criteria for the mobile manufacturing scheme, specifying that companies must achieve a turnover of Rs 10,000 crore by fiscal year 2026 to participate in the program.

These steps reflect the Indian governments commitment to transform the country into a major player in the global mobile manufacturing landscape.
