India Negotiates Free Trade Agreements to Expand Global Trade Coverage

Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, announced that India is currently in negotiations to establish Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with eight to nine additional countries and trading blocs. The goal of these agreements is to extend Indias trade coverage to 75% of global trade, enhancing opportunities for various sectors and industries.

Goyal highlighted this development during a recent press briefing, expressing optimism about the potential for increased economic partnerships that could benefit Indias economy and international trade relations. He noted that these FTAs would complement existing agreements and provide greater market access for Indian products.

In addition to the ongoing negotiations, Goyal mentioned that the Indian government is expected to make amendments to relevant trade and investment rules in the next two months. This is aimed at addressing the concerns raised by semiconductor and auto component manufacturers, which are critical sectors for the country’s industrial growth.

Furthermore, Goyal indicated that India is looking to collaborate more closely with Japan. Discussions are underway to review their existing trade pact in order to streamline investments and enhance bilateral trade. This strategic partnership is seen as vital for both nations to strengthen their positions in global markets.

As part of these efforts, Goyal emphasized Indias potential role in providing Japan with a competitive advantage within international supply chains, particularly in sectors poised for growth. With these initiatives, India aims to reinforce its presence in global trade networks and stimulate economic growth.
