SoftBank sells shares worth Rs 2,888 crore in Lenskart

SoftBank Divests Stake in Lenskart for ₹2,888 Crore

SoftBank Group Corp., the Japanese multinational holding company, has sold a 2.6% stake in Indian eyewear retailer Lenskart, amounting to a total value of ₹2,888 crore (approximately $347 million). The sale was executed through a series of block deals involving multiple investors, including major financial institutions such as Societe Generale, Goldman Sachs, and Motilal Oswal.

This divestment represents a significant return for SoftBank, with aggregate profits approximately 5.7 times the initial investment. Lenskart, founded in 2010, has rapidly expanded its presence in Indias eyewear market, leveraging both online and offline sales strategies. The company has gained prominence as a leader in the sector, focusing on innovative retail formats and digital technology.

The transaction has sparked renewed interest in Lenskart’s shares, which saw a rise following the announcement of the sale. As of now, Lenskart continues to explore avenues for growth, including potential international expansion.

SoftBank’s decision to reduce its stake in Lenskart aligns with its broader strategy of optimizing its investment portfolio, particularly in the technology and e-commerce sectors. The company has previously invested heavily in various startups across Asia and has been active in altering its equity positions as market dynamics change.

As part of this overhaul, SoftBank has also been focusing on enhancing liquidity and managing risks within its investment framework. The exit from Lenskart may indicate a strategic shift aimed at reallocating resources towards new opportunities in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

This transaction highlights the ongoing trends in the Indian investment landscape, where foreign investment in digital-first businesses is increasing, bolstered by the country’s growing consumer market.
