Kerala Seeks Complete Exclusion of Residential Areas from Western Ghats ESA
Kerala Government Proposes Exclusion of Residential Areas from ESA in Western Ghats
The Kerala government has announced its intention to seek the complete exclusion of residential areas and the Chief Heritage Regeneration (CHR) regions from the proposed Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) in the Western Ghats. This move comes amid growing concerns about the impact of environmental regulations on local communities and development.
The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been recognized for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance. The government argues that the inclusion of residential areas in the ESA could hinder development and affect the livelihoods of residents. Authorities are advocating for a balanced approach that protects the environment while also considering the social and economic needs of local populations.
The state’s proposal will be presented during discussions with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, as part of ongoing efforts to establish a comprehensive management plan for the Western Ghats. Environmentalists, however, have raised concerns that reducing the boundaries of the ESA may lead to increased pressure on natural resources and wildlife habitats in the region.
As discussions continue, stakeholders from various sectors, including local communities, environmental activists, and policymakers, are encouraged to engage in dialogue to ensure that the future of the Western Ghats aligns with both ecological preservation and the needs of its residents.
