Tulu Language Granted Official Status in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi

Karnataka Grants Official Status to Tulu Language in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts

The Government of Karnataka has officially recognized the Tulu language, granting it official status in the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. This decision aims to promote Tulu, which is spoken by a significant portion of the population in these areas and is an integral part of the regions cultural heritage.

The move is viewed as a significant milestone for Tulu speakers, who have long advocated for greater recognition and support for their language. With this official status, Tulu will be used in government communications and educational settings, fostering its preservation and growth.

Tulu is estimated to have around 2 million speakers, primarily in Karnataka and parts of Kerala. Efforts to promote the language through literature, theater, and educational initiatives have been underway for years, and this recent decision is expected to boost those initiatives further.

The acknowledgment of Tulu aligns with the states broader objective to preserve and promote linguistic diversity. This initiative may also encourage other regional languages to seek similar recognition, fueling discussions about local culture and identity within the state.

The Karnataka governments decision reflects a commitment to cultural inclusivity and the celebration of the states linguistic heritage, which comprises a rich tapestry of languages such as Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, and others.
