Karnataka Grants Official Language Status to Tulu in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Regions

Karnataka Government Recognizes Tulu as an Official Language in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi

In a significant development for the Tulu-speaking community, the Karnataka government has officially recognized Tulu as a language in the districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. This decision is aimed at promoting the use of Tulu in official communications, education, and cultural activities, thereby preserving and enhancing the regions linguistic heritage.

The recognition of Tulu as an official language is expected to benefit local residents by facilitating better access to government services and educational resources in their native language. Moreover, it could encourage more cultural programs and initiatives that celebrate Tulu literature, art, and traditions.

Tulu, which is a Dravidian language, is spoken by approximately 2 million people, primarily in the coastal regions of Karnataka and parts of Kerala. The language has a rich literary tradition and is integral to the identity of the Tulu-speaking population.

Community leaders and linguistic advocates have welcomed this decision, viewing it as a long-overdue acknowledgment of Tulu’s cultural and historical significance. Local organizations are already planning to celebrate this milestone with various events aimed at raising awareness about Tulus importance.

The decision underscores the Karnataka governments commitment to linguistic diversity and may set a precedent for similar recognitions of regional languages across the state.
