Launch of the South India Interstate Migration Survey 2026

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in India has announced the commencement of the South India Interstate Migration Survey for the year 2026. This survey aims to collect comprehensive data on migration patterns, demographic changes, and the socio-economic impacts of migration in southern states of India, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

Migration remains a significant phenomenon in India, influenced by various factors such as employment opportunities, education, and seasonal labor needs. The findings from this survey are expected to inform policymakers and stakeholders about migration trends and help develop targeted interventions to support migrants and their families.

The initiative will involve collaboration between local government agencies, researchers, and community organizations to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the data collected. It seeks to address vital questions related to internal migration and its effects on both sending and receiving regions in South India.

UNFPA has been actively working on projects that focus on population dynamics and their implications for sustainable development. The results of this survey will be critical in shaping future policies and programs aimed at improving the livelihoods and well-being of migrants and their communities.

The survey is expected to be completed by mid-2026, with preliminary findings likely to be presented in the latter part of that year.
