India Emerges as World’s Third-Largest Holder of Renewable Energy Capacity, Says Pralhad Joshi
India has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the third-largest holder of renewable energy capacity in the world, according to Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, and Mines. This announcement underscores Indias commitment to expanding its renewable energy sector, which has been instrumental in the countrys efforts to combat climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
As of late 2023, Indias total installed renewable energy capacity has surpassed 150 gigawatts (GW), primarily sourced from solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass energy. The government has set ambitious targets, aiming to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power generation capacity by 2030 as part of its national determined contributions under the Paris Agreement.
Joshi attributed this progress to various initiatives spearheaded by the government, including the introduction of favorable policies, financial incentives, and substantial investments in green energy infrastructure. Public and private partnerships have also played a crucial role in driving advancements in technology and production.
In the global context, only China and the United States currently hold larger renewable energy capacities than India. With an increasing focus on sustainability, India is enhancing its role in the international renewable energy dialogue and is expected to participate in forthcoming global discussions on climate policy.
This achievement is reflective of India’s broader environmental goals, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity and improve energy access, particularly in rural regions.
