Karnataka Requests ₹22,400 Crore in Drought Relief from the Central Government, Urges Early Release

The Karnataka government has formally requested a financial assistance package of ₹22,400 crores from the central government to address the severe drought conditions impacting the state. The plea emphasizes the urgency for an expedited disbursement of funds, as the state grapples with the ramifications of the dry spell which has significantly affected farmers and agricultural productivity.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in a memorandum submitted to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, outlined the adverse impact of the drought on the states economy and the lives of its citizens. He highlighted the need for immediate action to support affected farmers and ensure that relief measures can be implemented without delay.

Karnataka has been facing challenging weather conditions, with inadequate rainfall leading to water shortages and crop failures in several districts. The Chief Minister has expressed concern about the welfare of farmers who are struggling to cope with the economic fallout of these climatic conditions.

In addition to the relief funds, the state government is exploring other avenues to support its farmers and enhance resilience against future droughts, such as improving irrigation infrastructure and diversifying agricultural practices. The government is hopeful for a prompt response from the Centre to alleviate the distress faced by thousands of farmers and restore livelihoods across the region.

As Karnataka awaits a decision, the ramifications of the drought continue to linger, emphasizing the critical need for timely intervention and support from the central government to help the state recover and prepare for the future.
