Abhishek Banerjee Claims BJP Government at Centre Failed to Fulfill Promises to Rajbanshi Community
Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stated that the central government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has not yet addressed the request made by the West Bengal government for the inclusion of the Rajbanshi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This demand reflects a broader effort to ensure linguistic recognition and support for various regional languages in India.
The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution currently recognizes 22 languages and provides for the development and preservation of these languages. The Rajbanshi language is spoken by a significant community in northern West Bengal, as well as in parts of neighboring states and even across the border in Bangladesh. The movement for recognition aims to promote cultural identity and protect the linguistic heritage of the Rajbanshi people. The TMC has been vocal in advocating for this cause, emphasizing its importance for the community’s social and educational advancement.
