Agenda for Bangladesh FM Visit Expected to Include Ganga Water Sharing, Visa Issues, and Energy Cooperation

A visit by a high-ranking official is anticipated on April 7 and 8, marking the first trip by a foreign minister since the fall of the Hasina government in Bangladesh. This visit comes at a significant time as the newly elected Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) administration has expressed a greater openness to engage in negotiations regarding the renewal of the Ganga water sharing treaty.

This treaty, originally signed in 1996, governs the sharing of water from the Ganges River between India and Bangladesh, and its successful renewal is crucial for both countries, particularly in addressing water scarcity and management issues. During the tenure of the interim government, discussions surrounding this treaty were seen as stagnant. However, the new BNP government appears poised to explore collaborative approaches to enhance bilateral relations.

The anticipated visit may serve as an opportunity to foster dialogue on this critical issue, along with other bilateral concerns, amid ongoing regional environmental challenges. Negotiations could include discussions on sustainable water management practices, impact assessments for both nations, and efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change on the rivers flow.
