CAG Report Highlights Health and Hygiene Concerns Due to Overcrowding in Odisha Jails

In a report highlighting the inadequate facilities within the prison system, it has been revealed that the 87 jails across the region currently offer only 916 bathing facilities. This figure falls significantly short of the required 2,203 bathing places, indicating a shortfall of 1,287 facilities.

The lack of sufficient bathing areas raises concerns regarding hygiene and the overall well-being of inmates. Prisons are mandated to provide basic health and sanitation services, which are crucial for maintaining the physical and mental health of those incarcerated.

Authorities have yet to outline specific plans to address this shortfall, but it underscores the need for increased investment in prison infrastructure. Improving these conditions is essential not only for the welfare of inmates but also for supporting efforts towards rehabilitation and reintegration into society post-incarceration.
