Congress Criticizes PMs Push for Special Session to Amend Women Quota Law

Congress General Secretary for Communications, Jairam Ramesh, has raised concerns regarding the Modi governments proposal to increase the size of the Lok Sabha and the state legislative assemblies (Vidhan Sabhas) by 50%. He emphasized the need for thorough discussion and careful consideration of such a significant change.

Currently, the Lok Sabha consists of 545 members, including 543 elected representatives and 2 nominated members. The proposal to enlarge its size would have implications for representation, governance, and the electoral process in India. Similarly, each state’s Vidhan Sabha has varying numbers of members, and their expansion would also raise questions about regional representation and the feasibility of larger assemblies.

Rameshs statement comes in the context of ongoing debates regarding electoral reforms and the structure of parliamentary representation in India. As the government considers these changes, it could spark discussions among lawmakers, political analysts, and the public about the benefits and challenges of such an increase, particularly in terms of costs, legislative efficiency, and maintaining a balanced representation across diverse regions of the country.
