Congress Holds Discussions on Womens Reservation Law and Delimitation; Kharge to Confer with Opposition Leaders on Unified Strategy
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has announced a meeting of the INDIA coalition on April 15, 2024. This meeting is scheduled one day prior to a three-day special session of Parliament aimed at discussing proposed amendments to the women’s reservation law.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has expressed its support for the immediate implementation of a women’s reservation quota. However, the committee has underscored the need for broader consultations concerning the process of delimitation, which involves redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies. Delimitation is a crucial factor in ensuring fair representation in the context of any quota system.
The women’s reservation bill, which aims to allocate 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of Parliament) and state legislative assemblies to women, has been a subject of significant political debate and advocacy. Its passage could have far-reaching implications for gender representation in Indian politics.
As the April 15 meeting approaches, it will be interesting to see how the INDIA bloc, which comprises several opposition parties, strategizes in response to these developments, especially given the urgency of addressing women’s representation in the political domain.
