Countries Encouraged to Prioritize Vaccination for High-Risk Groups for Severe COVID-19
The World Health Organizations (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has issued a recommendation advocating for two doses of the routine COVID-19 vaccination annually for high-risk groups. This guidance is particularly aimed at the oldest adults, as well as older individuals who have underlying health conditions or are severely obese.
The recommendation emphasizes the importance of vaccination in preventing serious illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19 among vulnerable populations. According to SAGE, administering the vaccines six months apart will enhance immunity and help maintain protection against emerging variants of the virus.
Research has shown that older adults and those with specific health vulnerabilities are at a significantly higher risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19. As the pandemic continues to evolve, ensuring that these individuals receive adequate vaccination remains a key public health priority. The WHOs guidance is part of ongoing efforts to manage the pandemic effectively and reduce the burden of disease, particularly as booster vaccine strategies are being tailored to meet the needs of various demographic groups globally.
