Countries urged to prioritize vaccination for high-risk groups for severe COVID-19 outcomes.

The World Health Organizations (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has issued new recommendations advising two doses of the routine COVID-19 vaccination annually for high-risk populations. This guidance specifically targets the oldest adults and older individuals who have significant comorbidities or severe obesity, as they are at an increased risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19.

The decision comes in response to evolving data regarding vaccine efficacy and the ongoing emergence of new variants of the virus. The recommended interval of six months between doses is aimed at maximizing the immune response and providing sustained protection for those most vulnerable.

As the pandemic continues to impact global health systems and communities, SAGE emphasizes the importance of vaccination as a critical tool in controlling the spread of COVID-19 and reducing hospitalizations and fatalities in high-risk groups. The recommendations will be reviewed regularly to incorporate fresh evidence and adapt to changing circumstances related to the pandemic.
