Countries Urged to Vaccinate High-Risk Groups for Severe COVID-19
The World Health Organizations Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has recommended that individuals in high-risk categories receive two doses of the routine COVID-19 vaccine annually, with an interval of six months between doses. This guidance specifically targets the oldest adults as well as older adults who experience significant comorbidities or severe obesity.
This recommendation reflects ongoing efforts to ensure vulnerable populations maintain adequate immunity against COVID-19, particularly in light of emerging variants and potential waning vaccine effectiveness. Historically, older adults and those with underlying health conditions have faced higher risks of severe illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19.
SAGEs decision aligns with data suggesting that frequent booster doses may provide enhanced protection for those most susceptible to the virus. Health authorities around the world are expected to consider this guidance as they plan their COVID-19 vaccination strategies. Regular updates and research on vaccine safety and effectiveness continue to inform public health recommendations.
