CSIR-NCL Pune Develops New Domestic Fuel with Tamil Nadu Connection

Scientists at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) in Pune have developed an alternative fuel known as Dimethyl Ether (DME) in response to the ongoing global energy crisis. This innovative fuel is considered a promising substitute for conventional fossil fuels due to its potential for cleaner combustion and lower emissions.

Dimethyl Ether, which can be produced from various feedstocks, including natural gas and biomass, is gaining attention for its versatility and environmental benefits. It is used in various applications, including as a fuel for vehicles, in heating systems, and as a propellant in aerosol products.

The development aligns with global efforts to transition towards sustainable energy solutions, particularly as countries seek to reduce their reliance on non-renewable energy sources amid increasing awareness of climate change impacts. Researchers at CSIR-NCL are focusing on optimizing production processes and scaling up the technology to facilitate wider adoption of DME.
