Decline in Women Candidates Noted in Assam
In preparation for the upcoming Mandate 2026 elections, there has been a noticeable decline in the number of women candidates participating in the electoral process. In 2016, the total number of women candidates reached a peak of 91, a significant increase from previous years. However, for the 2026 elections, the number of women candidates has only risen slightly, with four additional candidates, bringing the total to 59. This figure shows minimal growth compared to the 55 women candidates registered in 2001.
The representation of women in political positions has been a critical discussion point, as many advocate for greater inclusivity and diversity in governance. Various organizations have called for initiatives to encourage more women to enter the political arena, highlighting the importance of equal representation and the contributions women can make to policymaking. As the elections approach, stakeholders continue to monitor these trends and advocate for reforms that may enhance womens participation in politics.
