DMK MP P. Wilson Critiques Finance Bill for Not Addressing LPG Shortage

India has emerged as one of the largest consumers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) globally, with annual demand reaching approximately 31 million tonnes. Despite this significant consumption, the country faces a critical challenge in its storage infrastructure, as it currently possesses the capacity to store only enough LPG to last for about three to four weeks.

The rise in LPG demand can be attributed to several factors, including an increase in household connections, the promotion of cleaner cooking fuels, and government initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution and enhancing energy security. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, launched in 2016, has played a pivotal role in providing LPG connections to millions of rural households, thereby fostering greater reliance on LPG for cooking.

However, the limited storage capacity poses potential risks in terms of supply chain disruptions, especially during periods of increased demand or unexpected logistical challenges. Industry experts and government officials are advocating for the expansion of storage facilities to mitigate these risks and ensure that supply can keep pace with the growing demand. Investing in infrastructure will be crucial as India continues to transition towards more sustainable energy sources while supporting its burgeoning population and economy.
