Environmental activist raises concerns over Kolleru Lakes degradation

In 1975, the total area of the lake was approximately 222,600 acres. However, recent estimates indicate that around 128,000 acres are now affected by aquaculture and encroachment activities. This information was presented by Bolisetty Satyanarayana, the National Convenor of Jal Biradari, an organization that advocates for the sustainable management of water resources in India.

Aquaculture, while a significant contributor to food production and local economies, can lead to habitat loss and affect water quality if not managed sustainably. The encroachment on lake areas, often due to urban development and agricultural expansion, raises concerns regarding biodiversity and the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. The need for effective policies and management strategies to balance development with environmental conservation has become increasingly pressing in light of these findings.
