From DMK Campaigner and MGR Enthusiast to Acclaimed Author

Kalapriya has noted that M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), the iconic actor and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, originally had ties with the Indian National Congress before aligning himself with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. Throughout his political journey, MGR cultivated relationships with a range of prominent political figures, including communist leaders K. Baladhandayutham and Kalyanasundaram. His political network was further bolstered by the guidance of veteran politicians such as K.A. Krishnaswamy and Panruti S. Ramachandran.

MGR’s dual background in cinema and politics provided him with a unique perspective on governance and a deep understanding of mass psychology. His ability to connect with the public, coupled with his experience in film, allowed him to effectively leverage his popularity for political gain. MGRs tenure as Chief Minister from 1977 to 1987 was marked by significant social welfare initiatives and charisma that resonated with the electorate, contributing to his enduring legacy in Tamil Nadu politics.
