“Impact of West Asia Conflict on Gas Supply: A Reflection on Indias Unconstructed Gas Grid”

India is advancing its National Coal Gasification Mission as part of its broader strategy to achieve energy independence. This initiative reflects a forward-looking vision first proposed by Syed Husain Zaheer in 1955, which suggested the establishment of a national gas grid. At the time, Zaheers plans were largely overlooked by policymakers. However, the necessity of such a framework became starkly apparent during the 1973 oil crisis, which underscored the vulnerabilities of relying heavily on oil imports.

The National Coal Gasification Mission aims to convert coal into synthetic natural gas, thereby reducing the countrys dependence on foreign oil and enhancing energy security. It is also expected to contribute to environmental goals by potentially reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional coal usage. More than a half-century after Zaheers initial proposals, Indias renewed focus on coal gasification highlights the ongoing importance of innovative energy policies in addressing the country’s evolving energy challenges.
