Independent Forces Assert Strength in Conflict with Alliances in Assam

Several political parties in India have been categorized as “non-aligned” entities. These include the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), the United Peoples Party Liberation (UPPL), and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).

The AIUDF, primarily active in Assam, focuses on the rights of the states minority Muslim population and has emerged as a significant force in regional politics since its establishment in 2005.

The UPPL, a regional political party in Assam, was founded in 2020 and aims to represent the interests of the Bodo community, particularly in the wake of recent peace agreements aimed at addressing longstanding grievances.

The AITC, headed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is well-known for its opposition to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has been a formidable player in West Bengals political landscape, especially following its victory in the 2021 state assembly elections.

These parties, by identifying as non-aligned, may be signaling a desire to operate independently of the larger national political coalitions, focusing instead on regional issues and governance.
