India Strengthens Air Defense Capability with Increased S-400 Deliveries
In 2018, India entered into a significant defense agreement with Russia, valued at approximately $5.43 billion. The deal involves the procurement of five squadrons of the advanced S-400 surface-to-air missile system, which is recognized for its capability to engage multiple aerial targets at various ranges, including aircraft and missiles.
The S-400 system is considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the world and has generated considerable interest internationally, contributing to strategic military partnerships. As part of the agreement, India aims to enhance its defense capabilities amid growing security challenges in the region.
The transaction came under scrutiny, particularly from the United States, which has imposed sanctions on countries that engage in significant military dealings with Russia under the Countering Americas Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). However, India has argued that the S-400 deal is a key component of its national defense strategy, reflecting its commitment to modernizing its armed forces.
Since the signing of the contract, the first deliveries of the S-400 systems have commenced, reinforcing India’s military readiness in a volatile geopolitical environment.
