Karnataka Identifies 274 Springs, with Belagavi District Contributing the Highest Number at 59

The inaugural Spring Census conducted in the state has identified the Western Ghats and Malnad regions as significant centers for the formation of springs. This phenomenon is attributed to the regions high levels of rainfall and their favorable geological characteristics.

The Western Ghats, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are known for their rich biodiversity and varied ecosystems, while the Malnad region is characterized by its hilly terrain and dense forests. The Census highlights the importance of these areas in maintaining local water resources, particularly during the dry season when springs serve as vital sources of freshwater for both human consumption and agriculture.

Researchers conducted the Census as part of a broader initiative to monitor and evaluate water resources in the state, with a focus on sustainable management practices. Local communities are encouraged to participate in conservation efforts to protect these springs, which are crucial for the ecological balance and livelihoods in the region. The findings of this Census may inform future policies aimed at enhancing water security and promoting sustainable development in these ecologically sensitive areas.
