Karnataka Information Commission Expresses Concerns Over Lack of Penalty Recovery from Officials for RTI Violations
As of now, a total of ₹2.70 crore has been recovered from 3,084 Public Information Officers (PIOs) under the Right to Information Act. This recovery comes against the backdrop of a significant penalty of ₹10.38 crore imposed by the Karnataka Information Commission (KIC) on 10,843 government officials serving as PIOs.
The fines are part of the KICs ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with transparency laws and prompt responses to information requests from the public. The penalties typically stem from delays or failures to provide requested information in a timely manner. In light of these findings, the KIC aims to reinforce the importance of accountability among PIOs and enhance the effectiveness of the RTI mechanism in Karnataka.
The data indicates that while a considerable number of fines have been levied, the recovery rate remains relatively low, prompting discussions about the enforcement measures and potential reforms necessary to improve compliance in the future.
