Karnataka Information Commission Includes Apex Bank Under RTI Act

The State Co-operative Apex Bank has been designated as a public authority, which means that information regarding its operations, including financial decisions, will now be accessible for public scrutiny under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

This development marks a significant shift in the transparency and accountability of the bank, allowing citizens to request information on various aspects of its functioning. The RTI Act, enacted in 2005, aims to promote transparency in government institutions and empower citizens by granting them the right to seek information.

Historically, co-operative banks have played a vital role in the economic development of various states, offering agricultural and small-scale loans to members and local businesses. With the new status, stakeholders, including depositors and cooperative members, will have the opportunity to hold the Apex Bank accountable for its decision-making processes.

Officials from the bank have indicated that they are prepared to comply with RTI requests and are working on implementing necessary changes to facilitate this new level of transparency. The decision is expected to enhance public trust and could lead to improved governance within the banking sector.
