Kasaragod Prepares for Competitive Three-Way Contest in Kerala Elections 2026

Kasaragod, Keralas northernmost district, is gearing up for assembly elections on April 9, 2024, with a competitive three-way contest expected. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)-led United Democratic Front (UDF) will face significant opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while an independent candidate supported by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) adds an additional dimension to the race.

The UDFs candidate, Kallatra Mahin Haji, aims to leverage his political legacy and the support of local constituents. Meanwhile, Ashwini M.L., representing the BJP, is focusing on development initiatives as central to her campaign. Shanavas Padhoor, the independent candidate backed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), is targeting grassroots appeal, seeking to address local concerns.

Key issues that are shaping the electoral landscape in Kasaragod include significant gaps in healthcare services, reliance on neighboring Mangaluru for economic and social needs, ongoing concerns regarding the effects of Endosulfan pesticide use in the region, and advocacy for linguistic rights, given the areas cultural diversity. As the election date approaches, candidates are expected to intensify their outreach efforts to address these critical issues impacting the community.
