Performance of Political Parties in the 2021 West Bengal Elections and Subsequent By-Elections

As West Bengal gears up for the 2026 assembly elections, a retrospective analysis of the 2021 electoral performance reveals insights into the dynamics between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, secured a decisive victory, winning 213 of the 294 seats. This marked a significant milestone for the TMC, enabling it to retain power for a third consecutive term. The partys campaign emphasized its development agenda and welfare schemes, resonating with a significant portion of the electorate, particularly in rural areas.

Conversely, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which had emerged as a formidable opposition force, made substantial gains compared to the previous election. The BJP captured 77 seats, a considerable increase from its 2016 tally of just three seats. The partys strategy revolved around nationalistic themes and a promise of development, positioning itself as a viable alternative to the TMC. However, despite its losses, the BJPs performance marked a significant affirmation of its presence in West Bengal politics.

As the 2026 assembly elections approach, both parties are likely to reassess their strategies based on the successes and challenges faced in the 2021 polls. Factors such as voter sentiment, socio-economic conditions, and the impact of state and central government policies will play crucial roles in shaping the upcoming electoral landscape in West Bengal.
