Potential Gas Supply Disruptions in West Asia Prompt Reflection on Unfinished Indian Gas Grid Project

India is advancing its National Coal Gasification Mission as part of a broader strategy to achieve energy independence. This initiative echoes a proposal made in 1955 by Syed Husain Zaheer, which was aimed at establishing a national gas grid. At the time, Zaheers vision did not gain traction among policymakers. However, following the 1973 global oil crisis, the importance of his proposal gained renewed relevance as countries worldwide began to seek alternatives to oil dependency.

The National Coal Gasification Mission aims to transform coal into a cleaner energy source, making it a critical element of Indias energy strategy to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. The focus on coal gasification is also in line with global trends towards cleaner energy alternatives and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As part of this mission, India seeks to develop domestic technologies and infrastructure that could enhance energy security while creating economic opportunities in the coal sector.

By reinvigorating Zaheer’s initial vision, India plans to create a more resilient energy framework that could mitigate the impacts of future global energy disruptions.
