Proposal to Recognize Amaravati as the Capital of Andhra Pradesh Expected to be Introduced in Lok Sabha
The Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a resolution on March 28, 2023, urging the central government to amend existing legislation to formally designate Amaravati as the capital of the state. This resolution reflects the ongoing discussions around the capitals status, which has been a matter of considerable debate since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
Amaravati was initially envisioned as the state capital and has seen significant investments in infrastructure development. However, the decision to select Amaravati was challenged by some political factions, leading to proposals for alternative capital arrangements. As a result, the assemblys resolution emphasizes the need for clarity regarding Amaravatis role and aims to ensure that the citys development continues to progress in line with its status as the capital.
The assemblys request is now set to be conveyed to the central government, where further deliberations will take place to determine the legal and administrative changes required to solidify Amaravatis status as the capital of Andhra Pradesh.
