Recap of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Elections

In the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections, the incumbent Left Democratic Front (LDF), headed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), achieved a significant milestone by winning 99 of the 140 available seats. This victory allowed the LDF to maintain its governing position in the state for a second consecutive term, a feat not accomplished in Kerala since 1987.

The election, held amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, saw a notable voter turnout of approximately 77.68%. The LDFs success has been attributed to various factors, including its management of the pandemic, welfare measures, and development initiatives undertaken during its previous term.

Following the election results, Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister and leader of the LDF, expressed gratitude to the electorate for their continued support and emphasized the government’s commitment to furthering progress and addressing the needs of the people in the upcoming legislative term.

The United Democratic Front (UDF), the main opposition alliance led by the Indian National Congress, secured 41 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), mainly represented by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), managed to win just one seat. This election was notable for its implications on political dynamics in the state, as well as for the broader context of party performance in India.
