Russian Oil Tanker Redirected from China to India
The oil tanker Aqua Titan, which is loaded with approximately 770,000 barrels of crude oil, has made a U-turn in Southeast Asian waters and is now on a course towards Mangalore port, India. Analysts suggest that the vessel is part of the so-called “dark fleet,” which is believed to be predominantly operated by entities associated with the Russian government.
The trend of dark fleet vessels has emerged as a response to sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These ships often engage in opaque trading practices, making tracking and regulation of the oil supply chain more difficult for international authorities.
Mangalore port, situated on the southwestern coast of India, is a significant hub for oil imports and refining in the region. The arrival of the Aqua Titan is likely to attract attention, given the ongoing discussions around energy security and supply chains influenced by geopolitical events.
As global markets continue to adjust to the impacts of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the movements of vessels like Aqua Titan could indicate shifts in energy sourcing strategies among nations, particularly those that may seek to procure crude oil outside traditional market norms.
