Tamil Nadu Government Unveils Draft Regulations for State Mental Healthcare, 2026
The Tamil Nadu State Mental Health Authority has announced the establishment of a comprehensive register for mental health professionals practicing within the state. This register will be updated on a monthly basis to ensure accuracy and relevance. In addition, the Authority plans to release a district-wise directory of mental health professionals annually on January 1, providing residents with easy access to available services.
This initiative aims to enhance the visibility and accessibility of mental health support across Tamil Nadu, addressing the growing need for mental health services. By creating a transparent system for identifying qualified practitioners, the Authority seeks to improve public awareness and confidence in accessing mental health care.
Mental health professionals included in the register may encompass a range of specialties, including psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and social workers. The move comes in light of increasing recognition of the importance of mental health care, particularly following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tamil Nadu Government continues to promote mental health awareness and support initiatives as part of its broader public health strategy.
