Tea Association Requests Clarification on Land Transfer Policy for Plantation Workers in Assam

Ahead of the upcoming elections, the BJP-led government has amended existing legislation to provide legal land rights to approximately 350,000 families of plantation workers residing in labor lines across more than 800 tea estates. This amendment aims to secure property rights for these workers, many of whom have lived under precarious conditions for generations.

The change is part of the government’s broader initiative to address the land tenure issues faced by plantation workers, who often lack formal ownership of the land they occupy. The move is expected to improve the living conditions and socio-economic status of these families, offering them a form of security and stability.

Tea estates in India, particularly in states like Assam and West Bengal, employ a considerable number of laborers, many of whom come from marginalized communities. By providing legal rights to land, the government intends to empower these workers and their families, which could have implications for electoral support in the forthcoming elections.

The amendment is anticipated to enhance productivity and growth in the tea sector by fostering a more secure environment for workers, while also addressing long-standing grievances regarding land ownership.
